Mir Hossein Moussavi, who has recently lost the Iranian presidential elections, rejected recounting the votes in areas where the opposition questioned the results, demanding fresh elections. Iran's powerful Guardian Council, which is controlled by the hardliners, announced a partial vote recount and ruled out new elections because this would change the votes obtained by the four candidates. Moussavi said he was not optimistic about the Council's decision, describing many of its members as "non-neutral".
With the continued turmoil in the Iranian street, a spokesman for Moussavi said that reformist Moussavi, who is supported by Iranian former President Mohammad Khatami, urged his own supporters to cancel their plans to rally, following mass protests a day earlier in which seven people were reportedly killed. Moussavi's supporters were supposed to rally at five GMT. Moussavi made this decision after pro-Ahmadinejad crowds accumulated in central Tehran to protest against the "acts of vandalism and violence" made by Moussavi's supporters.
Iranian press photographer said he took a photo of hard-line Islamists shooting a man during a march last Monday when people attacked the Basij militia.
