Military vehicle bombed near US airbase in Afghanistan
Published in Albawaba on 03 - 05 - 2016

An explosion destroyed a vehicle belonging to U.S.-led foreign forces near the U.S. Bagram Airfield in Afghanistan's northeastern Parwan province, a local police official said Tuesday.
Police Chief Mohammad Zaman Mamozai said the incident took place at around 9 p.m. (1630 GMT) Monday night when U.S.-led foreign forces were conducting patrols in the village of Bagram, which is located some 60 kilometers north of capital Kabul.
He said foreign troops had since cordoned off the area, adding that no one had been allowed near the blast site until 8 a.m. (0330 GMT) Tuesday morning.
There was as yet no information regarding causalities, the police chief said.
U.S. forces in Afghanistan have since confirmed the incident, but have not provided a death toll.
"We are aware of the reports. U.S. forces-Afghanistan and Afghan forces were conducting a joint operation to dispose of old ordnance on the east side of Bagram Airfield," a U.S. military media office said Tuesday.
Village resident Ahmad Bilal said a military tank had been damaged by the blast. Foreign troops, he added, had surrounded the site until early Tuesday morning.
The Taliban militant group, for its part, has claimed to have destroyed a U.S. armored vehicle by explosives planted in Bagram.
"The tank was destroyed and all American soldiers in the vehicle [were] killed," Taliban spokesman Zabihullah Mujahid said.
