Cousins Hasan and Jonas Edmonds planned to attack a Joliet, Illinois armory and kill as many as 150 people. Hasan also planned to join ISIS. A former Illinois National Guardsman turned terrorist had planned to join the Islamic State overseas, while his cousin had planned to attack an armory in the United States. Hasan Edmonds, 23, was dropped off at the Chicago Midway airport by his cousin, Jonas Edmonds, 30, to begin the first leg of his trip. Jonas then proceeded to Hasan's house to retrieve a number of National Guard uniforms and an Illinois National Guard Drill schedule, all of which he planned to use to aid him in attacking the Joliet armory. He intended to kill as many as 150 people. FBI agents with the Joint Terrorism Task Force arrested Hasan before he was able to board the plane. Jonas was arrested a short time later at his place of residence. According to the Sun-Times, Hasan was carrying a black backpack containing all-weather and camouflage notepads, a camera, a Quran and two books, Fortress of the Muslim and The Covenant of the Flame, when he was arrested. Both men entered into plea agreements and pleaded guilty to charges of conspiring to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization. Agents had followed the two online at every step of the way in their planning the attack. An undercover agent was with the cousins when they visited the National Guard base the day before their arrest and picked up a military training schedule. Jonas is scheduled to be sentenced January 27 and faces up to 23 years in prison, while Hasan will be sentenced March 18. He faces up to 30 years in prison. Both men lived in Aurora, Illinois.
