UPDATE: Egypt's military spokesperson Mohamed Samir said in a statement on Saturday a mortar shell targeted a security checkpoint southern Sheikh Zuwaid, North Sinai, killing three army personnel and wounding four others, Al Bawaba News reported. The military has bombarded several terrorist hotbeds in villages in Sheikh Zuwaid, killing dozens of jihadi elements, the spokesperson added. Earlier on Saturday, the state-run MENA news agency said five army personnel were killed and seven others were wounded. The Egyptian army has launched a wider campaign against an insurgency in the Sinai Peninsula following a string of deadly blasts, claiming hundreds of lives among security personnel and civilians since the ouster of former president Mohamed Morsi, July 2013.
