Former presidential candidate Ahmed Shafik's supporters threatened Saturday to boycott the upcoming parliamentary elections in the event he wasn't allowed to return to Egypt and resume his political activities, Al Bawaba newspaper reported. The newspaper quoted the coordinator of the ‘Shabab Shafik' campaign, Ahmed Abdel Karim, as saying: "We will campaign to boycott the parliamentary elections, if our calls for his return and taking his name off the watch lists and travel bans are not answered." Shafik narrowly lost during the 2012 Egyptian presidential elections to ousted president Mohamed Morsi, then-candidate of the dissolved Muslim Brotherhood political wing, the Freedom and Justice Party. He received 48.27% of the votes, compared to Morsi's 51.73%. In September 2012, Morsi's government issued an arrest warrant on Shafik, who was later acquitted of all charges. His name is still on the airport's watch lists pending investigation in other corruption-related cases.
