Pierre Krahenbuhl, head of the U.N. Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA), visited Syria Sunday to investigate conditions of Yarmouk refugee camp. Krahenbuhl expressed his deep concerns about the refugee camp's state after it has been stormed at the hands of Islamic State (IS) militants on April 1. UNRWA will deliver humanitarian aid to the afflicted Palestinians who have fled to Yalda and Babila, two neighborhoods on the outskirts of Yarmouk, Krahenbuhl said, calling for providing a safe passage to rescue the trapped civilians inside Yarmouk camp. "We called for a very clear respect for the civilians who are inside Yarmouk, we called for the possibility for civilians to temporarily leave in a safe way Yarmouk, to be able to be assisted outside. We will continue to call for this", UNRWA head said. The Yarmouk Camp is an unofficial refugee camp established in 1957 in Damascus, Syria. Populated by Palestinians, the camp has hospitals and a school and is considered the largest Palestinian refugee community in Syria. Since 2011, the camp has witnessed fierce clashes between the Free Syrian Army, the Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine and several terrorist groups.
