Egypt is considering ways to resume the gradual reduction of custom fees on cars manufactured in Europe and imported to Egypt until reaching zero custom duties by 2019, as per the European partnership treaty with Egypt. Europeans threaten to impose duties on Egyptian goods, including clothes and some agricultural crops, because Egypt didn't commit to the gradual reduction of customs on European cars, according to the partnership agreement between the two sides (EFTA), Secretary general of the Egyptian-European Partnership Unit, Ambassador Gamal Bayomi told Almasry Alyoum.
The EFTA States Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland had signed a free trade agreement with Egypt in Davos, Switzerland, on 27 January 2007. The main objective of the Agreement is to achieve the liberalization of trade in goods. By January 1st 2020, customs duties on almost all industrial products will have been eliminated.
