Youths have their own language on Facebook and other social networks. So what's new? Some are beginning to use Facebook for political education, a free zone to explore political beliefs.
"Think with me" is a Facebook initiative in which a group of young Egyptians from different political backgrounds sit down together online to discuss political issues, then try to reach an agreement on what should be the solution to a certain political issue.
"I chose the name because there is a problem in the way people think politically. They take the information from a source as given, without thinking for themselves," explained Mohamed Nabil, a college student and administrator of the group.
An additional reason for the creation of the group is for one to create one's own opinion about a certain political issue through hearing, examining, and having more than one political viewpoint and exchanging the opinions of other members in the group, which leads to a critical analysis of what is happening in the political environment from different angles. An opinion is then reached. Another reason is to deliver the information objectively, to uncover the truth about a certain political issue, and to create political awareness of what politically goes around in the country. "I have no hidden agenda and I act as a gatekeeper," Nabil said.
On the group's advantages, Nabil said other groups are not that serious and the administrators of some groups delete opinions they do not agree with. "In the group there is a lot of different political ideologies, and as for the ones with no political ideology, there is also a place for them to state their opinion. In addition, there is no deletion of any posts, only those that are irrelevant, that do not talk about politics. And, if a member can persuade another member of an opinion, they respect each other's opinions, nonetheless. Members invite their friends to join in and this shows that they like the idea of the group."
Active members like Sohail Maharik and Ahmed Mamdouh agree with Nabil that the group gives the opportunity to create political awareness and exchange opinions with respect to each other's opinion, regardless of political ideology and even if they do not share the same opinion.
"Think with me" shows that there are honest people that put the best interests of the country ahead of themselves. In addition, these young souls refuse to be reduced to the desperateness that revolves around the future of the country. These volunteer boys and girls take time to try to reveal the political situations in the country and educate the ones who need guidance on how to think on their own.
