HEAD of the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) Field Marshal Hussein Tantawi has asserted Egypt is committed to international agreements previously signed and reaffirmed the military's commitment to hand over power to an elected civilian government. "The army had to play politics to protect the country from threats which the Egyptian people are unaware of," Tantawi said on Tuesday while attending routine military exercises conducted by the Second Army in Ismailia. Tantawi's Deputy Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Sami Anan and a number of other SCAF members attended the drill. Tantawi also spoke about hostile plots to down the country, but again did not reveal details. "Our Armed Forces will never respond to attempts which aim to bring the army down and hurt Egypt and its great people. The army will carry out its mission to the end, hand over power and defend the borders, our sacred mission."
