ON MONDAY, Mrs Suzanne Mubarak, head of board of trustees of the Bibliotheca Alexandrina (BA), honoured Boutros Boutros-Ghali, former UN secretary-general and current head of the National Council for Human Rights (NCHR), on the occasion of Ghali's donation of a copy of the Description de l'Egypte to the library, reports Reem Leila Boutros- Ghali also offered his personal archives while he was state minister for foreign affairs and UN secretary-general. These papers will be added to his digital archive on the BA's website. Mrs Mubarak presented Boutros-Ghali with two memorial shields and a statue of Prometheus. At the beginning of the ceremony the BA's head, Ismail Serageddin, reviewed Boutros-Ghali's digital archive whilst praising the donor's diplomatic achievements. He also described the 20-volume Description de l'Egypte as "one of the strongest and most profound studies undertaken of Egypt, the work of more than 150 scientists and 2,000 artists who accompanied Napoleon Bonaparte on the French expedition to Egypt." In response, Boutros-Ghali expressed his gratitude to Mrs Mubarak for the honour and for her unstinting support throughout his career.
