Choosing the right wedding bouquet
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 20 - 12 - 2018

Your wedding is one of the most important celebrations of your life. Yet, being a bride is not an easy task, and it can be very stressful as you want every detail to be perfect.
Among the key steps to planning your bridal look is picking the right bouquet. And though your bridal bouquet may seem like a small detail, you shouldn't overlook it. It's more than just a bunch of flowers tied together for you to hold on your big day. It's the ultimate romantic statement as flowers are the language of love, according to many.
Wedding bouquets are part of a centuries-old tradition symbolising luck and fertility, and the bouquet toss is meant to spread that luck to others. Whether your wedding style tends towards the traditional or the trendy, your bouquet can be a defining element in your bridal style. It can add colour to a traditional dress or complement an alternative wedding vibe.
Here are some tips that may help you choose the perfect bridal bouquet to fit your style:
Wedding bouquet

- Confirm your venue, type of celebration and dress. The type of wedding you'll be having and the dress you'll be wearing are essential to helping you pick the right bouquet. The ideal time to begin thinking about bridal flowers is after you've chosen your gown and ceremony setting.
- Consider the colour of your bouquet. Not all wedding dresses are plain or simple white. Coordinating colours can help ensure that your wedding flowers will look right and won't clash with other colours in the background. If you're keen on an all-white bouquet, make sure it comes in a similar shade to your wedding dress for a perfect match.
- Choose a wedding bouquet that complements your height and body type. A petite bride can go for a small and round bouquet, while a tall bride can opt for a more voluminous or longer one. Full-figured brides can hold sizable bouquets, while leaner brides should go for narrower and lengthier ones.
- Play with the length of the stems and ribbons, but always keep in mind that you shouldn't be hiding behind the flowers. For a passionate, romantic bride, go for a bouquet of red roses. You can choose a baby's breath arrangement if you're looking for a sincere and innocent feel. A lavender bouquet is ideal for bohemian brides. For those who are planning on wearing a simple dress, consider a bouquet with strong and contrasting colours. Vintage brides can go for a bouquet with pastel-toned roses and peonies or romantic ballerina bouquets.
- Set a budget and stick to it. Flowers can be expensive, so when planning your wedding budget do your research and come up with a realistic amount.
Finally, there's no right or wrong choice, so go for flowers you like. Choosing the right wedding flowers depends on personal taste. Each bouquet should reflect your personal preferences, although you should also be open to suggestions from your florist.
