Electric conversion
Published in Al-Ahram Weekly on 19 - 04 - 2018

Hearing about the new age of electric cars changed a lot of perspectives and long-term planning for many car and motorbike consumers. Many living in Europe started selling their internal combustion vehicles and started going electric once their cities were ready with charging stations and car companies started offering reliable electric vehicles. Also, nations like the UK and France had already issued laws that will make electric and hybrid cars the majority on the streets by 2040, even subsidising electric cars and charging them zero taxes. All this and with all the reliability electric cars are offering these days, many believe an electric car for daily use is the best choice.

It's not that easy for some people to let go of their car; it's not just a vehicle that takes you from point to point. Even if sacrificing paying high taxes and insurance to enjoy your car for as much as possible today or tomorrow, knowing that it will be impossible to enjoy your car at some point in the future is frightening. The good news is that now it is possible to strip your existing car from all the internal combustion system and fit it with an electric system instead.
What a bargain, since electric cars are more expensive compared to internal combustion. Since your old car will lose value when selling it, why not keep your car and convert it to electric – more powerful for less price.

Several workshops in the US have started working in this sector, like Electric Classic Cars which converts classic cars including Volkswagen Beetle into an all-electric car that can cover up to 250 miles. Electric conversion kits are also available on the Internet, ready for plug-and-play starting from $6K up to $20K. People have already started buying old stylish classic cars with an engine restoration for a cheap amount of money and fitting them with an electric conversion kit, combining the golden classic era with the future.

So, why don't we start such projects in Egypt with cars that would instead end up being thrown in the junkyard? Imagine the resources that would save.
