36th round of the General Exhibition was inaugurated a couple of days ago at the Palace of Arts different halls located in the Cairo Opera Complex in the absence of the culture minister but with the participation of 318 artists who showed 3,601 artworks in the fields of painting, sculpture, graphics, ceramic, photography, installation, drawing, computer graphic, calligraphy as well as naïve arts. The curator of this year's edition is ceramist Shawki Maarouf and the selection committee was headed over by Ahmed Nabil with members Ashraf Mahdi, Osama Afifi, Ayman Al-Semari, Diaaeddin Dawoud, Reda Al-Danf and Salah Hammad. The committee announced that it has selected works by 318 artists out of a total number estimated at 592 which is the highest number in comparison to the past editions. In the painting section, 124 artists submitted 129 works. And, in the sculpture section, 51 sculptors presented 59 sculptures. While, in photography 32 photographers presented 38 photographs. And, last but not least, in ceramics 27 ceramists participated with 33 works, in computer graphic 10 works were submitted by nine artists. The General Exhibition is considered the biggest gathering of Egyptian artists from different art media that reflect the status quo in the Egyptian art movement. Part of the artworks are also on display at Mohsen Shaalan gallery (formerly Abaad gallery) in the Museum of Modern Egyptian Artincludingworks by 14 pioneer artists such as Ahmed Suleiman, Gamaleddin Hanafi, Hassan Suleiman, Hassan Al-Bannani, Abdel-Aziz Darwish, Adli Rezkallah, Zeinab Al-Segeni and Mustafa Al-Fiqi.
