As Egypt seeks to find its path into the future, the 2013 annual CARAVAN Festival of the Arts has the theme “In Peace and with Compassion …The Way Forward.” Sponsored by the Embassy of Switzerland in Egypt, and supported by the British Council, the festival will focus on visual public art, literature, film and music. The subject in Cairo will be the donkey which symbolises peace in both Islam and Christianity. Participating artists included renowned Egyptian artists such as George Bahgory, Ibrahim Al-Dessouki, Mohamed Abla, Reda Abdel-Rahman to expatriate artists such as well-known Norwegian artist, Britt Boutros-Ghali. (All attendance is free of charge, but 20 per cent of all art sales go to Egyptian charities)
St John's Church Maadi, Corner of Port-Said Road and Road 17, Tel 2358 3085 Thur 9, 7pm: The opening of a public exhibition showcases 80 fiberglass life size sculpted donkeys created by Egyptian and Western artists. Opening remarks by Muslim and Christian dignitaries. Sat 11, 7pm: A talk by world-renowned actor Amr Waked on his films Syriana and Salmon Fishing in the Yemen and a screening of his latest film, Winter of Discontent. Mon 13, 7pm: Political activist and best selling author Alaa Al-Aswani will give a talk and book signing. Thur 16, 7pm: Closing concert by oud player and composer George Kazazian.
