Presidential hopeful Hamdeen Sabahi has claimed that figures linked to corruption are supporting the presidential campaign of retired army chief Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi. "There are honorable figures in El-Sisi's campaign, but all the icons of corruption are in his team and are backing him," Sabahi said during an interview with Al-Mayadeen satellite channel late on Saturday. Al-Mayadeen said its signal was jammed during the show. The Nasserist leader, who came third in the 2012 presidential election, also called on Egyptians to "consider who is lining up at notary offices in the governorates to support El-Sisi." Presidential hopefuls are required to gather a minimum of 25,000 notarised recommendation forms, signed by at least 1,000 people from 15 different governorates, to be eligible to run. In earlier statements, Sabahi's campaign claimed members of former president Hosni Mubarak's now-defunct National Democratic Party were mobilising in support of El-Sisi. "Why hasn't El-Sisi taken a stance against his supporters backing of the former regime?" asked Sabahi. Following three weeks of campaigning beginning on 3 May, Egyptians will vote in the first round of the election on 26-27 May.
