Art Alert: Don Quixote ballet returns to Cairo Opera after long absence Between 14 and 18 April, the Cairo Opera Ballet Company will perform 'Don Quixote' in conjunction with the Cairo Opera Orchestra
On five consecutive evenings (between 14 and 18 April), the Cairo Opera Ballet Company, accompanied by the Cairo Opera Orchestra conducted by Nayer Nagui, will perform 'Don Quixote,' a ballet based on the famous novel Don Quixote de la Mancha by Miguel de Cervantes. The original ballet, set to music by Ludwig Minkus, consisted of four acts and premeired in Moscow, Russia, on 26 December 1868, performed by the Imperial Bolshoi Theatre's ballet troupe. It was Gorsky who proposed an amended choreography in 1900 and since then the ballet has been a staple on international stages, with many choreographers developing Gorsky's version of the ballet. In Egypt, the ballet will be performed with its classical choreography by Marius Pepita entwined with elements from Gorsky and topped with artistic touches by the late Abdel Moneim Kamel, former director of the Cairo Opera Ballet Company. The artistic director of the troupe is Erminia Kamel. Though 'Don Quixote' is within the Cairo Opera Ballet Company's repertoire, it is not performed frequently. The troupe first performed this ballet in 1992, and then in 2005. Thus the ballet returns once again to the Cairo Opera House stage after a nine-year absence. Programme: 14, 15, 16, 17, 18 April at 8pm Cairo Opera House, Main Hall, Zamalek, Cairo http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/98733.aspx
