PROGRAMME: Masry Asly Film Fest to kick off 15 March
The 2014 Masry Asly Itinerant Film Festival will be taking place between 15 March and 17 April in Cairo, Aswan and Damanhour
Published in Ahram Online on 11 - 03 - 2014

The 2014 Masry Asly Itinerant Film Festival (MAIFF) will be touring three Egyptian cities -- Cairo, Aswan and Damanhour -- between 15 March and 17 April.
This is the second edition of MAIFF, which was established in 2013 to acquaint audiences with independent films by Egyptians or about Egypt and provide talented filmmakers with the opportunity to screen their works to larger numbers of viewers around the country.
Among the festival's main goals is taking art and culture outside of Egypt's main cities, enabling the inhabitants of various locations around the nation to enjoy a selection of films that seldom make it to movie theatres.
The festival is divided into two sections. The first is the Masry Asly Competition, where 24 Egyptian short films and documentaries compete for two awards, the Jury Award and the Public Award. In the second section, named Eyes On, six short films and documentaries not necessarily Egyptian but telling stories about Egypt are screened.
Winners in the Masry Asly Competition section will be awarded a residency at the Binger Filmlab in Amsterdam, an international talent and project development centre for feature films and documentaries.
The festival is organised by RC (Ricerca e Cooperazione) and SEMAT for Production and Distribution, in collaboration with the Artistic Creativity Centre, the Cultural Development Fund, the Damanhour Opera House and the Aswan Cultural Palace. It is co-funded by the European Union.
MAIFF 2014 will be in Cairo from 15 to 18 March, in Aswan on 25 and 26 March, and in Damanhour from 15 to 17 April.
