Code Pink co-founder tweets in detention at Cairo airport Medea Benjamin was en route to Gaza when she was detained; authorities reportedly to deport her to Istanbul within hours
Co-founder of the pro-Palestinian Code Pink organisation Medea Benjamin was detained at Cairo airport upon her arrival early Tuesday en route to Gaza. "I am being held in a jail at Cairo airport" the American human rights activist tweeted on her official Twitter account "@medeabenjamin" earlier today. Benjamin posted two photos of the room where she and other women are detained at the airport and of the food presented to them. "Only food for 5 women is dirty stale bread and dirty water," she tweeted along with a photo of the bread. According to news reports in Egypt, Benjamin is to be deported within hours from Cairo to Turkey's Istanbul, upon the request of local security authorities. Medea Benjamin's Facebook page says she was heading to Cairo to greet "an international women's delegation" on its way to Gaza to attend International Women's Day, celebrated yearly on 8 March worldwide. The Rafah Border Crossing between Egypt and Gaza was repeatedly closed by Egyptian authorities in recent months, as it currently is as well. Code Pink is a US left-wing women-based human rights organisation defending Palestinian statehood and aiming to end "US-funded wars and occupations." http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/95856.aspx
