Art Alert: Cairo Video Festival screens selection in Opera House
Medrar for Contemporary Art, the group behind the 5th Cairo Video Festival, will screen a selection of films at the Opera House's El-Hadara Cinema Center
Published in Ahram Online on 17 - 02 - 2014

On Thursday 20 February, Medrar for Contemporary Art, presents a selection of the 5th Edition of the Cairo Video Festival in El-Hadara Cinema Center on the Cairo Opera House Grounds.
The Cairo Video Festival, which was hosted in Medrar's space in Garden City between 25 September and 7 October 2013, showcased almost 200 video art projects and experimental films hailing from more than 30 countries. The festival featured a screening programme and an ongoing exhibition, in addition to a talk by prominent artist Hala El-Koussy throughout the festival's duration. The festival was followed by a workshop for video art production.
The festival is Medrar's first project, and upon which the space and association to support media arts and young artists was established. This was the first time Medrar's headquarters in central Cairo hosted the festival, and the biggest edition of it yet. The previous editions hosted between 2005 and 2010 were hosted by partner institutions such as Goethe-Institut and Contemporary Image Collective (CIC).
Since 2005, Medrar has hosted festivals and workshops, provided a collaborative space for a growing movement of media artists, and disseminated audio-visual material documenting the local contemporary art scene, through its three core projects: the video festival, Open Lab Egypt, and Medrar TV.
