Modest turnout on first day of Egyptian expat voting in Saudi Arabia Almost half of Egyptian expats who are registered to vote are located in Saudi Arabia
The Egyptian embassy in Saudi Arabia announced Wednesday that turnout by expats on the first day in which they can vote in the constitutional referendum was "average," but is expected to increase over the next few days. Forty-six percent of the total Egyptian expats registered to vote are in Saudi Arabia, according to the Egyptian foreign ministry. In a statement on Wednesday, the Egyptian embassy located in Riyadh said it had witnessed an average turnout as Wednesday is a workday, but that numbers had increased by the end of the day. Around 2,000 people voted at the Riyadh location on Wednesday, and a similar number in Jeddah. There are 12 polling stations open for Egyptian expats in Saudi Arabia. Some locations are for women or families only, to ease the process of voting. The embassy expects numbers to increase on Friday and Saturday, both weekend days in Saudi Arabia. Voting for Egyptian expats around the world will be open from 8 to 15 January. The total number of Egyptian expats who are eligible to vote in the poll is 681,346. They are located in 161 countries around the world. Voters in Egypt will go to the polls on 14-15 January. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/91142.aspx
