Court orders release of ex-Brotherhood guide Akef, other charges keep him in prison
Former Muslim Brotherhood supreme guide Mahdy Akef will remain in prison pending other charges, including incitement to murder
Published in Ahram Online on 10 - 12 - 2013

A southern Cairo court has ordered the release of former Muslim Brotherhood supreme guide Mahdy Akef on charges of insulting the judiciary, postponing his trial to 11 February.
Akef's lawyer Mohamed El-Damaty told Ahram Online that the defendant will remain in prison as he still faces other charges.
The Brotherhood leader is accused of insulting the judiciary for his statements in an April interview with Kuwaiti newspaper Al-Jarida in which he described Egyptian judges are "corrupt."
According to El-Damaty, Akef is saddened by the charges as he affirms to have supported the judiciary all his life.
Akef will face a separate trial for allegedly inciting the killing of protesters in front of the Brotherhood headquarters in Cairo's Muqattam during anti-Morsi protests on 30 June and during clashes in Manial.
A large number of the Brotherhood's senior leaders have been arrested since Islamist president Mohamed Morsi was removed early July. The crackdown intensified mid-August following the forced dispersal by security forces of two large Cairo protest camps demanding Morsi's reinstatement.
