Ahly's veteran defender and skipper Wael Gomaa hopes to achieve more in the Club World Cup than the bronze medal they won in Japan in 2006. "I have a personnel ambition to reach a new ranking in the Club World Cup. We have already played five times and finished from third to fifth. I hope we can get past them in Morocco," the 38-year old defender told the club's website. The Eight-time African champions beat Orlando Pirates from South Africa last month to reach the Club World Cup for the fifth time in their history. The tournament this year will be held in Morocco from 11 to 21 December. "Playing in Morocco will help us a lot, as we will avoid jet lag, the freezing weather, and we will have better support from Ahly and Arab fans," he added. However the international defender warns his teammates that they must keep their feet on the ground and not get carried away. "Bayern Munich is one of the best teams in the world now, perhaps even the best after seeing their performance over the past few years. But we can't think about them now because we will first play Guangzhou (the Asian champions), who are a very strong team," he concluded. Guangzhou have stormed Chinese football over the past two years and claimed the Asian title for the first time under the guidance of Italian World Cup winning coach Marcelo Lippi. Former Ahly coach Manuel Jose, who was at the helm when the Red Devils claimed the bronze, seemed sceptical about the team's chances. "Ahly have a big problem. They only play once a month, which was also the problem with the national team when they lost 6-1 to Ghana [in FIFA World Cup qualifying]. Ghana plays about eight matches a month because they play in Europe," he was quoted as saying by FIFA. Africa's best performers are TP Mazembe from of DR Congo, who finished as runners-up to Inter Milan in 2010.
