Policemen in Egypt protest for higher wages Egypt's police force, the target of protester fury during the revolution, continue their own demonstrations for improved conditions
More than 1500 policemen demonstrated on Tuesday in front of the ministry of interior demanding higher wages and an end to military trials. The protesters also demanded the resignation of the current minister of interior, Mansour El-Essawy, and the return of Mahmoud Wagdy in his place. Policemen have been holding demonstrations demanding their economic rights and imporved working conditions since mid-February. Thousands had demonstrated in Tahrir Square following former president Hosni Mubarak's ouster to declare their support of the January 25 Revolution, which has opened the way for such expressions of anger over their working conditions. Egypt's police - infamous for its heavy-handed tactics - was a primary target of anti-Mubarak regime demonstrators during the uprising that began on Egypt's national Police Day holiday on 25 January. Over the course of the revolution, police stations were the focus of many protests and burnings with some members of the police force and former interior minister Habib El-Adly implicated in the brutality against and shooting of unarmed protesters.
