Ahly players ready for Cameroon trip, Ghana showdown: Captain Ahly captain says preparations are going well for Cameroon game and national team clash with Ghana this October
Ahly defender Wael Gomaa says October is an important month for him and his teammates in the Egyptian national team and Cairo giants. The Cameroonian Coton Sport team will host Ahly in the first leg of the CAF Champions League in Garoua on 5 October, while the second leg will be played in Egypt on 20 October. "Ahly players are concentrating on keeping the Champions league title under their belt," Gomaa was quoted as saying on Ahly's official website. "We consider the home and away games against Coton sport as one game divided into two legs," he added. "The team is working to win the first leg in Cameroon as well as the second in Cairo to prove our ability to reach the tournament final." Ahly won in their group to qualify for the semi-final. Coton Sport qualified after finishing second in Group B with eight points, seven behind Esperance de Tunis. "We are concentrating on preparations for the Coton Sport game more than the Cameroonian side itself." Seven-time African champions, Ahly, are eyeing their eighth title in the continental competition as Coton Sport seeks their first African title. Ahly players ready for Ghana showdown Egypt are set to face Ghana in the first leg of the 2014 World Cup playoffs on 15 October, with the return leg on 19 November. Eleven international Ahly players left the Egyptian national team's closed camp for the game against Ghana in the 2014 World Cup playoffs, which kick off on 15 October. The international players are Shefir Ekrami, Wael Gomaa, Mohamed Naguib, Rami Rabia, Ahmed Fathi, Ahmed Shedid, Sayed Moawad, Hossam Ashour, Abdallah El-Said, Walid Soliman and Mohamed Abou-Treika. "Ahly players can split their concentration between the two games, Coton Sport and Ghana," Wael Gomaa said. The Pharaohs were scheduled to play a friendly against Sierra Leone on 28 September, but the latter backed out due to security concerns. They will now host Uganda on Monday as an alternative without the Ahly players who are preparing for the CAF Champions League game on Saturday. "We will finish the Coton Sport game then return to the Egyptian camp to prepare for the Ghana game," Gomaa added. The Pharaohs are eyeing their first World Cup appearance since 1990, while Ghana is seeking to reach the tournament for the third consecutive time, having reached the quarter-finals in their last appearance in 2010.
