Egypt's constitution-drafting body selected on Sunday three deputies, a general rapporteur and a spokesperson. The three elected deputies are: Female lawyer and deputy head of the National Council for Human Rights Mona Zul-Fekar, prominent Islamist thinker and ex-leading Muslim Brotherhood figure Kamal El-Helbawy and world renowned heart surgeon Magdi Yacoub. Head of Cairo University Gaber Nassar was elected as a general rapporteur and Mohamed Salmawy, head of Egypt's Writers Union was chosen as the committee's official spokesman. The 2012 constitution is being amended after the charter was suspended as part of a transitional 'roadmap', which was set out by Egypt's interim administration following the military's overthrow of president Morsi on 3 July amidst mass popular demonstrations. Pursuant to a presidential decree, issued by Egypt's interim President Adly Mansour on 8 July, the charter is due to be approved within "sixty days" of the board's first session, convened on Sunday at the headquarters of Egypt's Shura Council in downtown Cairo. The diverse 50-strong committee is planning to revise proposed amendments, which were drafted by an initial 10-member legal panel, reducing the charter by 38 articles to 198 and amending several others.
