Egypt football to resume despite security concerns Egypt Cup scheduled to kick-off on 17 October, Premier League on 23 November, football association deputy chairperson says
The Egyptian Football Association (EFA) has said the Premier League season will start on 23 November, despite security concerns. The EFA also set 17 October as the starting date for the Egypt Cup, 14 November for the second division league and 23 November for the third division. All tournaments are supposed to end by May 2014. "All dates announced are final and have been determined after coordination with the security authorities and the sports minister, Taher Abou Zaid. All expressed support for resuming football activity," EFA Deputy Chairman Hassan Farid was quoted as saying by Al-Ahram daily newspaper on Wednesday. Egypt has cancelled two successive Egyptian Premier League seasons midway through due to security troubles. It cancelled the 2012 season after more than 70 spectators died following clashes between rival fans after a league game. The 2013 season was cancelled in the wake of the ousting of elected president Mohamed Morsi by the military following mass protests. "All clubs will be officially informed of the competition dates within the upcoming hours," Farid added. Security concerns are still ongoing. The biggest clubs in the country, Ahly and Zamalek, are forced to play their African Champion League home games at Gouna stadium, 430km away from the capital, Cairo. Even the national team will be playing their last group stage match in the African qualifiers for the 2014 World Cup on 10 September at the military-owned Borg El-Arab stadium in Alexandria behind closed doors.
