US citizen to be referred to military prosecution in Sinai MENA news agency says a US citizen will face a charge of breaching the curfew following his arrest in North Sinai
A US citizen arrested in North Sinai will be referred to the military prosecution for investigation, the Egyptian state news agency MENA reported Wednesday. James Henry, 55, a retired officer, was arrested on Al-Arish Road — according to MENA reports — during the curfew currently imposed in 14 Egyptian governorates from 9pm to 6am daily. A security source told Al-Ahram Arabic news website that he is accused of breaching the curfew. Henry was reportedly on his way to Gaza on the Egyptian border, accorting to the source. He lived alone in an apartment in Sheikh Zuwayed town in North Sinai and authorities took posession of documents he held. Egypt is currently under a state of emergency introduced as violence broke out nationwide following a deadly crackdown by security forces on Islamist pro-Morsi protesters staging sit-ins in Cairo. The state of emergency was accompanied by a curfew the army has deployed on the streets to enforce. At least nine foreign nationals were detained in Cairo earlier in August on charges of involvement in violence that ensued following the 14 August dispersal of the pro-Morsi sit-ins. Meanwhile, Egypt's restive Sinai Peninsula has witnessed increased tensions recently with repeated attacks on police and military sites, mainly by suspected Islamist militants.
