Brotherhood leader Abu Baraka detained in Cairo
Egyptian police forces arrest leading Muslim Brotherhood member and ex-parliamentarian Ahmed Abu Baraka, in latest wave of arrests
Published in Ahram Online on 22 - 08 - 2013

Top Muslim Brotherhood member and former MP Ahmed Abu Baraka was arrested by Egyptian security forces Thursday in an apartment in the Sayeda Zeinab district in central Cairo.
Abu Baraka is the latest in a string of arrests including the Brotherhood's top leadership in addition to a wave of detentions of its members that included hundreds of members this week.
Abu Baraka is a member of the Brotherhood's Guidance Bureau who's lead member, Supreme Guide Mohamed Badei, was arrested on Tuesday also in Cairo.
The arrests started after the Egyptian presidency announced a state of emergency on 14 August following a bloody dispersal by security forces of Brotherhood-led sit-ins in Cairo and Giza. The protesters are demanding the reinstatement of ousted president Mohamed Morsi, who hails from the Brotherhood.
At least 900 were killed and thousands more injured – the large majority of which were Morsi supporters – during the dispersals and in protests in the days that followed.
On Saturday, the police announced it had arrested 1,004 Brotherhood members.
The Brotherhood spokesman Ahmed Aref was also arrested on Thursday.
Brotherhood leaders arrested earlier, Deputy Supreme Guides Khairat El-Shatter and Rashad Bayoumi were slapped with charges of inciting violence against protesters during Morsi's rule, which was cut short on 3 July – after a year in power – when the army stepped in amid mass protests against him.
The army quickly installed a civilian government and instituted a transitional ‘roadmap' agreed to by Morsi's opposition that included constitutional amendments and parliamentary and presidential elections.
