Wasat Party leader Madi handed additional 15-day detention Abu El-Ela Madi faces charges of inciting violence against opponents of ousted president Morsi during Nahda, Bein Al-Sarayat clashes
Giza's prosecution has extended the detention of Wasat Party leader Abu El-Ela Madi for another 15 days pending investigation into charges of inciting violence, according to the Middle East News Agency (MENA). Madi is being held in Tora prison and faces accusations of inciting violence during clashes at Giza's Nahda Square and in Bein El-Sarayat between opponents and supporters of ousted president Mohamed Morsi. On 3 July, the use of shotguns, live ammunition, and Molotov cocktails was reported during clashes between supporters and opponents of Morsi. Intermittent clashes also took place in Nahda Square near Cairo University, leaving at least 16 dead and 200 injured. Madi is accused of inciting violence by way of inflammatory speech directed at Morsi supporters. The Wasat Party founding member is known to be a staunch supporter of former president Morsi. The Wasat Party was founded in the late 1990s by defectors of the Muslim Brotherhood, the Islamist group from which Morsi hails. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/78873.aspx
