Telecom Egypt signs MoU with Etisalat Egypt over integrated license Fixed-line operator signs agreement with mobile operator over launching complete communications services
Telecom Egypt, the country's only fixed-line operator, confirmed that it had signed a memorandum of understanding with mobile operator Etisalat Egypt to launch an integrated license, in a statement to the Egyptian Stock Exchange on Thursday. The landline operator, which is 80 percent state-owned, is seeking to launch mobile phone services to ease pressure from declining fixed-line subscriptions. The Egyptian government is planning to allow Telecom Egypt to provide mobile phone services and at the same time the three existing mobile operators - Mobinil, Vodafone Egypt and Etisalat Misr – will be allowed to provide landline services. The anticipated license will be a virtual license by which Telecom Egypt will use the existing infrastructure of competing operators, while mobile operators use its landline network infrastructure. Total fixed-line subscribers to Telecom Egypt fell from 7.9 million in the first quarter of 2012 to 7.2 million in the same quarter in 2013, ending 31 March. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/76790.aspx
