Egypt's Illicit Gains Authority detains son of Fathi Sorour for 15 days Tarek Fathi Sorour, son of Mubarak era heavyweight Fathi Sorour, is detained for 15 days pending investigations on profiteering charges
Egypt's Illicit Gains Authority (IGA) decided Thursday to detain Tarek Fathi Sorour, son of the former head of the Shura Council Fathi Sorour, for 15 days pending investigations into charges of profiteering and illicit land acquisition. The IGA also accused Tarek FathiSorour of fraud in hiding his fortune from the authority.The IGA confronted him with fake financial and tax statements, as well as records of the money he gained because of his father's status. Tarek FathiSorour was previously released in 2012 on LE100,000 bail. Fathi Sorour is considered one of the heavyweights of the Mubarak era. He served as Parliament Speaker from 1990 until the revolution in 2011. He also served as education minister. He was released from prison without bail 23 October 2012 after an appeal court ruled that corruption accusations against him were not serious enough to keep him in detention. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/74509.aspx
