Group D leaders Zambia were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Sudan on Saturday, giving Ghana the chance to leapfrog them in the World Cup qualifiers.
Zambia midfielder Jacob Mulenga put the hosts in front after 70 minutes but Sudan's Malik Mohammed secured a share of spoils two minutes later.
Second-placed Ghana, who are two points short of leaders Zambia (11 points), could overtake them at the top if they beat Lesotho on Sunday.
Elsewhere, Botswana defeated Central African Republic 3-2 in Group A.
Central Africa's Nicaise Ozingoni opened the scoring in the 33rd minute but Jerome Ramatlhakwane brought Botswana level four minutes before the break.
Ozingoni restored the visitors' advantage in the 50th minute but Mogakolodi Ngele and Ofentse Nato scored in the 74th and 86th minutes respectively to give Botswana a late victory.
Botswana are third in Group A with four points while Central African Republic are at the bottom with 3 points, seven behind leaders Ethiopia.
In Group J, Uganda made the most of their home advantage to defeat Angola 2-1 and go two points clear of second-placed Senegal.
Job put Angola in front in the 57th minute but two goals from Emmanuel Okwi and Tonny Mawejjea in the last 10 minutes handed Uganda all three points.
The victory put Uganda on top of the group with eight points. Senegal can reclaim their position as the group leaders if they beat Liberia on Sunday.
