Five people died Thursday after falling into an open sewer in the Upper Egyptian governorate of Assiut.
The incident took place as a new drain was under construction near a residential building in the village of Bouk in Assiut.
The civil defence forces and ambulances arrived at the scene to remove the bodies from the sewer, Egyptian state news agency MENA reported.
Poor infrastructure and lack of clear safety measures result in a number of similar accidents in Egypt. In February, nine people died of suffocation and three were injured after falling into an open sewer in a sewage plant in the village of Meit Kanaa in the Nile Delta Qalyubia governorate.
