PROGRAMME: Four Countries – Four Movies, screening in Cairo
Four Countries – Four Movies is part of an alliance of four Central European states to organise shared events showcasing a variety of arts projects

The Visegrád Group is an alliance of four Central European states: Czech Republic, Hungary, Poland and Slovakia.
According to the Visegrád's official statement, "these countries are closely linked by a shared history and Christian heritage, which is reflected in their common Central European identity. This identity manifests itself in a particular way in the works of literature, music, movie and other forms of the arts."
Visegrád's mission is to launch a series of cultural events showcasing arts of the region to Egyptian audience. This long-term cultural commitment will include film screenings, music and art exhibitions.
Four Countries – Four Movies is the first project of the Visegrád Group.
Movies will be held every Wednesday, between 22 May and 12 June, at 8pm at the Office of the Hungarian Cultural Counsellor (address: 13 Gawad Hosni Street, 2ndfloor, Downtown, Cairo).
All films will be with English subtitles

Somewhere in Europe

Acclaimed as one of the most important Hungarian post-war cinema productions,Somewhere in Europeis basically a propaganda film financed by the Hungarian Communist Party. The movie is a story of determination and survival of a group of runaways and orphans who meet a former concert pianist who affects their destinies as their struggle against the disgruntled townsfolk.

Duration: 87 min (black and white)
The movie is adapted from a novel by Karel Michal. Even though it premiered with great success in Venice International Film Festival in 1969, the movie was banned in the Czech Republic until the 1990s. The storyline goes back to the 17th century Thirty Years War when an impoverished Bohemian Czech, led by Protestants, plans to incite a revolt against the rulers of the Hapsburg Empire.

The film is released in association with Slovak TV, Czech TV, and with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Slovak Republic. The storyline looks into a promising young ballerina whose dreams are shattered by the departure of her boyfriend and soon after she sprains her ankle. Though her artistic path seems to recover after she meets an older charismatic doctor, the events take a questionable turn as the story of the doctor unveils.
