Already-qualified Zamalek maintain perfect run with late victory A late goal gives Zamalek their 12th victory in 13 Egyptian Premier League games following a 1-0 win over El-Entag El-Harby on Friday
Ahmed Eid converted a late penalty as already-qualified Zamalek maintained their perfect Egyptian Premier League run with an easy 1-0 victory over El-Entag El-Harby on Friday. Zamalek were unlucky not to go in front in a first half they completely dominated but made the most of their numerical advantage after El-Entag's Ahmed Saied received a red card to emerge winners following Eid's 87th-minute penalty. The Cairo giants, who had already qualified for the league's final round with four games to spare, are on top of Group A with 36 points, nine clear of second-placed Ismaily with three matches to go. The top two in Groups A and B will reach the final phase, where a mini-league with only home fixtures will be held to determine the champion. Success-starved Zamalek are chasing their first league title since 2004. Zamalek were in total control, wasting several clear-cut chances to go ahead in a one-way traffic first half. They almost grabbed the lead after five minutes when a Mahmoud Fathallah header struck the woodwork after a corner from veteran playmaker Eid. Ibrahim Salah's follow-up effort was also denied by the post. The White Knights also went close with some long-range shots, including one from midfielder Nour El-Sayed which was tipped over by El-Entag keeper on the stroke of halftime. Chances were few and far between in a lethargic second half. Zamalek still had the better possession and their cause was helped by the dismissal of El-Entag's Saied. The introduction of attacking midfielder Mohamed Ibrahim and pacy winger Hazem Emam injected zeal, with the latter winning the penalty that tipped the game in Zamalek's favour. An onrushing Emam was brought down by Mohamed Hammouda, allowing Eid to send the keeper the wrong way and give Zamalek all three points.
