Egypt's first-ever female ambassador and minister dies at 85 Aisha Rateb, the first woman to ever serve in senior government positions in Egypt, dies at age 85 in Cairo
Former minister of social affairs and the first Egyptian female to be given an ambassadorial post, Aisha Rateb, died Saturday at the age of 85 in her home in Giza as a result of a grave health crisis. Rateb became Egypt's first-ever female minister, in charge of social affairs during the Sadat era. After resigning from her post in protest over the president's response to the 1977 'bread uprising' protests, Sadat reshuffled her as ambassador to Denmark. Rateb is also the sister of well-known actor Gamil Rateb. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/70673.aspx
