Egypt to buy $500-$600 mn of extra fuel this summer: Oil minister Petroleum minister tells Reuters that Egypt plans to import additional quantities of fuel this summer to meet rising electricity demand and avoid power cuts
Egypt plans to import additional fuel quantities this summer worth between $500 million and $600 million to meet rising electricity demand and avoid increasingly frequent power outages. The Petroleum Minister Osama Kamal was quoted on Monday by Reuters saying Egypt would begin importing natural gas and mazut (a low-quality fuel) from May to October. Egyptian electricity stations consume 90 million cubic metres of fuel per day, but national consumption is expected to jump to 110 million cubic metres this summer, according to the minister. Kamal added that Egypt would pay $1 billion of its debts to global oil companies within the next few weeks.
