Mashrou3 Hagar: Art Empowers! is an arts project sponsored by the European Union and the Darb 1718 Contemporary Art & Culture Centre, designed to offer a series of art workshops and information sessions with NGOs in the summer of 2012, revolving around female issues in Egypt, culminating in a itinerant exhibition that tours the country.
The project, which kicked off last June, aimed at “fostering the emergence of a post January 25 generation of visual artists by providing means and expertise to enhance their freedom of expression on women's issues,” according to Darb 1718.
A group of 15 participants were selected to participate in this project by attending visual art workshops led by professional European artists and curators, participating in discussions with prominent women empowerment NGOs and public figures, and contributing to a travelling exhibition that relayed the outcome of the discussions and workshops, held in Alexandria, Sohag, and finally, Cairo.
Designed to spark a dialogue over art's role in empowering women, the project was a dynamic experience that provided technical training workshops for emerging artists while exposing them to vital issues facing women in contemporary Egyptian society. Mashrou3 Hagar: Art Empowers! also enabled young artists to produce their own artworks and exhibit them in three cities across the country.
The exhibition tour kicked off at the Alexandria Atelier in November, followed by a show at the Sohag Culture Palace in December. This month, the exhibition makes its final stop at Cairo's Darb 1718.
