'Classics': New series to republish Arabic heritage and literature The new series will present Arabic literary heritage to readers in new editions, including the first modern Arabic novel
The Egyptian Lebanese Publishing House (Al Dar-Al-Masriah Al-Lubnaniah) has started publishing a new series under the title "Classics," aiming to republish in new editions the classics of Arabic literature from the 20thcentury. The publishing house started the series with six books deemed gems of Arabic heritage, includingAl-Abarrat w Al-Nazarrat (Tears and Looks), Paul and Virginia and Magdalene by Mostafa Lotfi El-Manfalouti (1879–1924),andZeinab, Abu Bakr Assiddiq, and Othman Ibn Affan by Mohammed Hussein Haikal (1888–1956). The series is an attempt to present Arabic literary heritage to new readers. The books are forworded with biographies of the writers and contain explanatory annexes that explain some obscure meanings in the books, especially those written more than a century ago that contain some words not regularly used in Arabic now. The series will continue with more books by Haikal, including The Life of Prophet Muhammad. Works by Ibn Tofail and Ahmed Amin are on the list. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/61516.aspx
