NAC calls for presidential council of five
The National Association for Change presents a detailed account of how Egypt's transitional period should be managed

The National Association for Change (NAC) -- a loose grouping of political affiliations centered around democracy advocate Mohamed ElBaradei -- issued a statement yesterday to the Supreme Council of the Armed Forces detailing the group's vision for Egypt's future.
Among its key demands is the establishment of a presidential council composed of five individuals who enjoy “credibility and integrity,” with one of its members chosen from among Supreme Council of the Armed Forces.
The statement went on to call for a provisional cabinet of ministers composed of neutral individuals unaffiliated with the former regime. None of these ministers or members of the presidential council will be eligible for the presidency at the end of the transitional period, the statement emphasized.
The NAC highlighted the key tasks of the transitional government to include the lifting of emergency laws; the reduction of the size of central security along with the liquidation of the state security apparatus; the dissolution of local councils; amending the law to allow for the free establishment of political parties, syndicates, newspapers and TV channels; and the establishment of a committee to write a new constitution that upholds a parliamentary democracy free of discrimination on the basis of religion, sex or colour.
This transitional period would end with a referendum in a year's time on the new constitution, followed by presidential and parliamentary elections. The statement warned against rushing into elections before a new constitution, “as this would only bring back the same system that grants a president absolute power.”
The NAC also called for the immediate release of all political prisoners, as well as the prosecution of suspected members of the former regime complicit in corruption, or whose actions led to the murder of protestors during the January 25 Revolution.
