AUC celebrates life, work of 2011 martyr/artist Ahmed Basiony
The American University in Cairo is organising a trilogy of events that commemorate the artwork of Ahmed Basiony, martyred during the Day of Rage protests on 28 January 2011
Published in Ahram Online on 23 - 09 - 2012

Three exhibitions at prominent art institutions in Cairo will showcase Ahmed Basiony's groundbreaking works in the fields of interactive digital art, sound art and performance. Archived footage of his work as an arts educator will also be on display.
Ahmed Basiony (1978-2011) was an artist and a professor in the Department of Fine Arts at Helwan University, with a passion for new media technology and representing socio-cultural matters through unorthodox mediums. He pioneered a sound and experimental digital art movement in Egypt's contemporary art scene. He was shot dead 28 January during protests at the onset of the revolution.
The series of memorial exhibitions will kick off at the American University in Cairo's Sharjah Art Gallery on 30 September, where his project, Thirty Days of Running in Place, previously exhibited at the Vennice Biennale, will be showcased.
On 6 October, Darb 1718 will host the opening of the second exhibition, a retrospective show of Basiony's sound art, performance and new media installation project.
Finally, an archive of documentation from his experimental sound art workshops and other educational endeavours will be showcased at the ASCII Foundation of Contemporary Art Education starting 20 October.
