Egyptian Attorney-General Abdel-Meguid Mahmoud on Sunday referred a complaint against former army chief-of-staff Sami Anan to military prosecutors.
The complaint, filed by Egyptian lawyer Samir Sabri, accuses the former member of Egypt's Supreme Council of the Armed Forces (SCAF) of amassing a fortune by exploiting his military position. The complaint further accuses Anan of illegally appropriating state land.
Anan, along with former SCAF head Hussein Tantawi, was ordered to retire last month by President Mohamed Morsi. On the same day, Morsi unilaterally abrogated the SCAF's controversial 18 June constitutional addendum, which had served to curtail the president's powers.
Several Egyptian activists have called for the prosecution of Anan and Tantawi for their roles in a series of post-revolution clashes between military personnel and protesters, including last year's infamous "Maspero Massacre" in which scores of unarmed demonstrators were killed.
