Approximately one thousand people protested dawn Thursday on the Cairo-Alexandria agricultural road, in protest of the death of one of the city's residents while undergoing investigations at a local police station. The residents of the Delta city of Qalioub took to the streets when the news emerged, also reportedly **, resulting in a stop in both railway and road traffic. They accused the police authorities of torturing the suspect Sameh leading to his death as a result of severe beatings to the chest. Sameh had been detained along with a second suspect for the possession of 20 units of cannabis, arms and what appeared to be a stolen mobile phone. According to state-owned MENA news agency, had been detained previously a number of times. A security source asserted that the cause of death was not a result of any torture or violence at the hands of the police. He told MENA that while being questioned in the Shubra El-Kheima police station, Sameh experienced extreme fatigue and went into a sudden coma. He was immediately transported to nearby hospital, but died on the way, despite attempts to resuscitate him. The source also added that despite the suspect's family's claims that he died from torture, Ramadan detained with Sameh, confirmed that his cause of death was not a result of torture. He asserted that Ramadan's comments confirm what was relayed in the medical report. Following early Thursday's protests, police authorities attended to the scene in an attempt to resolve the crisis and convince the residents to reopen the roads and railway that had led to a complete standstill for several hours in the early day.
