Alexandria police arrest owner of collapsed building Owner of apartment block is charged with ignoring previous safety warnings, contributing to Saturday's tragedy in which 19 died
The owner of an Alexandria building that collapsed at the weekend has been arrested for ignoring previous safety warnings. Nineteen people died in Alexandria's Gomrok district on Saturday when three buildings collapsed and another partially foundered. Nine Egyptians were injured, seven of whom have been transferred to the University of Alexandria's central hospital. The arrested owner of one building has been named as Mohamed Ibrahim. The head of Alexandria's security directorate told local media that local building owners were criminally responsible for ignoring official safety warnings and refusing to repair their properties. He said that emergency services will continue to dig through the rubble in search of survivors. It was not the first time Egypt's major coastal city has seen such a tragedy. In 2008, 11 people were killed in Alexandria when a four-storey building in which they were sleeping collapsed. http://english.ahram.org.eg/News/47829.aspx
