Aya Medany (Pentathlon)
Published in Ahram Online on 15 - 07 - 2012

Egyptian modern pentathlon athlete Aya Medany will be hoping to finally win an Olympic medal in her third attempt.
The 24-year-old, one of Egypt's most high-profile athletes, finished 28th in her first Olympic appearance eight years ago in Athens, quite an achievement for a player who was only 15 years - the youngest member in the Egyptian delegation back then.
In 2008, few months after she finished as runner-up in the Senior World Championship in Hungarian capital Budapest for her best ever achievement at a senior level, Medany was deemed favourite to win a medal but eventually cut a forlorn figure after finishing eighth in the Beijing Games.
Medany qualified for the London Games after winning the African Championship in Alexandria in July 2011. She is expected to face a stiff competition in London, however, given that her recent run form has been somewhat disappointing.
She appeared out of form after suffering an injury during the World Cup in Argentina in April, failing to win any title in 2012.
Medany could only finish in the 12th place in May's World Championship in Italy. A fourth-place finish at the World Cup in Brazil was her best result this year.
''Aya picked up an injury during the World Cup in Brazil, which affected her performance. But she is recovering now and she will be fit for the Olympics games,'' Egypt's coach Walid El-Sayed told Al-Ahram.
Medany will be eager to finally deliver when she takes part in the London Games, shouldering Egyptian hopes of clinching a medal.
