Police officers' coalition threatens to go on countrywide strike
Published in Ahram Online on 07 - 07 - 2012

Police coalition considers going on a general strike after lawyers refuse to represent them in court in retaliation over a melee that broke out in a police station with attorneys on Friday
Ahmed Mostafa, spokesperson for the General Coalition of Police Officers and Non-Commissioned Security Personnel, revealed Saturday they will consider a nationwide strike in retaliation to the Lawyers' Syndicates' refusal to represent policemen facing charges across the country.
During the early hours on Friday, a police station erupted in an altercation between lawyers and policemen. The head of the Lawyers' Syndicate, Sameh Ashour, demanded the suspension and prosecution of all policemen involved in the incident.
He stated the lawyers would continue their sit-in where the clashes occurred and further threatened to call for mass, countrywide protests. Ashour also put into effect a boycott; denying policemen representation in trials across the country.
The general police coalition declared on Saturday that it would hold an emergency meeting to discuss their reply to Ashour's statement.
The Coalition's statement does describe Ashour's announcements as "irresponsible" and says that it stirs antipathy against policemen.
Mostafa, told Al-Ahram's Arabic-language news site that they will discuss the option of a nationwide police strike during the meeting.
Some lawyers have already started the boycott, as demonstrated on Saturday, when lawyers of policemen abstained from defending their clients in the courtroom during the trial of the Port Said football massacre.
A number of Egyptian lawyers started a sit-in in front of the Nasr City police station Friday after the violent clashes took place.
The stories conflict, with each side accusing the other of initiating the violence that left 16 injured; both lawyers and policemen.
Egypt's interior ministry pledged to put the policemen accused of involvement in the melee on trial within 48 hours, as the prosecution has started investigating the incident.
