In an electric atmosphere, members of Ahmed Shafiq's campaign have said that they are still awaiting the final results, frustrated with what they referred to the “facade” results of Mursi's winning.
Media coordinator of Shafiq's campaign told Ahram Online, "Mursi's campaign are spreading fake news of victory in order to be able to claim vote-rigging when Shafiq wins,” adding that the SPEC (Supreme Presidential Electoral Commission) announced that the official results would not be issued before Thursday.
Anxious, quiet and closely watching the vote-counting, members at the former prime minister's headquarters in Dokki, Cairo said that “many governorates have not tallied up their results yet,” and that their candidate still has a chance.
The runoffs have been a heated competition between Ahmed Shafiq and his rival, the Muslim Brotherhood's Mohamed Mursi, while indications so far put Mursi in the lead - 51.74% to 48.25% - with 99% of votes reported according to the campaign of the Brotherhood leading figure.
