VIDEO: Last-gasp Salah gives Egypt thrilling win in Guinea Egypt secure a late 3-2 win over Guinea away from home in a thrilling World Cup qualifier on Sunday
Mohamed Salah scored deep in stoppage time to hand Egypt a precious 3-2 win over 10-man Guinea in Conakry in an action-packed World Cup qualifier on Sunday. The promising forward, who will join Swiss side Basel in the close season, beat Guinea's stand-in keeper Abdul Aziz Keita with aplomb with virtually the last kick of the game to silence the enthusiastic home crowd. Guinea's supporters were sent into raptures few minutes earlier when substitute Alhassane Bangoura looked to have secured a share of spoils with an 88th-minute strike. The hosts started brightly after breaking the deadlock on 18 minutes, thanks to a penalty from Abdoul Camara. Classy playmaker Mohamed Abou-Treika, who was once again Egypt's best performer after excelling in the 2-0 win over Mozambique, leveled the score 13 minutes after the restart. The Ahly man converted a penalty few minutes later to put Egypt in front after Guinea's keeper Naby Yattara was sent off for a wild challenge on midfielder Hosni Abd-Rabou. Bangoura restored parity after a fine individual effort but the late drama favored an Egyptian side who maintained their perfect start to the qualifiers despite lack of competitive domestic action following February's infamous disaster. Egypt have six points from two games, three ahead of second-placed Guinea. Mozambique and Zimbabwe, who played out a goalless draw earlier on Sunday, lie third and fourth respectively with a solitary point. The group winners will qualify for the final and decisive round, where two-legged ties will take place to determine Africa's five representatives at the 2014 World Cup in Brazil. Wasteful Egypt Egypt coach Bob Bradley opted for a cautious formation that featured three central midfielders in Mohamed Shawky, Mohamed El-Nenny and Hosni Abd-Rabou but Guinea were still able to take the lead after 18 minutes. Abd-Rabou looked to have felled Stuttgart winger Ibrahima Traore in the area, although television replays were inconclusive as to whether there was areal contact. Camara stepped up to open the scoring although Egypt keeper El-Hadary got a hand to his shot. Egypt launched wave of attacks but were let down by some poor finishing, a problem former United States coach Bradley highlighted before the game. Salah shot wide with the goal at his mercy on 31 minutes and lone forward Mohamed Nagy 'Gedo' was unlucky to see his low shot strike the post seven minutes later. Bradley then threw caution to wind in a bid to rejuvenate his side's attack, bringing on forward Ahmed Temsah instead of Ahly's Mohamed Shawky, who looked a shadow of his old self. Pulsating half In a pulsating second half, Egypt's pressure finally paid dividends in the 58th minute when Temsah ghosted unmarked on the left to receive a pass and pull the ball back to Abou-Treika, who made no mistake with a fine first-timer. He scored his second of the night nine minutes later, firing home from the spot after Yattara was dismissed for a kung-fu kick on Abd-Rabou. Egypt looked in complete control, moving the ball around smoothly and squandering several chances which would have put the result beyond doubt had they converted them. A superb three-man maneuver released Abou-Treika in the 73rd minute but he missed out on the chance of completing his hat-trick after hitting the side netting from a narrow angle. Temsah also saw his chipped effort goes narrowly wide in the 85th minute. Egypt were paid for their wastefulness with two minutes remaining when Bangoura wrong-footed two defenders to race clear and find the bottom corner with a precise shot. However, the vociferous Guinean fans were silenced four minutes into stoppage time when Salah broke clear after running onto a brilliant pass from Zidan to beat the keeper with a curling shot.
