The Chelsea duo helped Ivory Coast beat Tanzania 2-0 in their Group C opener of 2014 World Cup qualifiers on Saturday. An early goal by Chelsea winger Salomon Kalou in the 18th minute gave Ivory Coast the upper hand from the beginning, with Didier Drogba doubling the score ten minutes before the end of the match giving the Elephants a 2-0 win. Tunisia also benefited from their home advantage, defeating Equatorial Guinea 3-1 at Monastir on Saturday when striker Essam Gomaa found the net in the 52nd minute. Then Harbaoui doubled the score five minutes later before Hammami scored the third goal in the 88th minute. Equatorial Guinea scored their only goal – with their forward, Epitie – in the 35th minute. In Group D, Sudan snatched three points against Zambia after beating them 2-0 at Khartoum, when Mohannad El-Tahir scored the first goal in the 51st minute before Saifeldin doubled it in the 73rd minute. Morocco midfielder Houssine Kharja, meanwhile, salvaged a 1-1 draw with Gambia in Group C of the qualifiers, also on Saturday, after snatching his team's only goal in the 76th minute. Sierra Leone made use of the home advantage to defeat Cape Verde Islands 2-1 at Freetown in Group B. The Leone Stars dominated their foes, scoring their first goal – with striker Kamara – only ten minutes into the match. Suma then doubled the score in the 26th minute, while the Blue Sharks scored the consolation goal via striker Ze Luis during injury time.
