Video: Attacks on Shafiq are result of envy, campaign statement According to his campaign, the assault on presidential candidate Ahmed Shafiq was prompted by his rising stakes
The attack on presidential hopeful Ahmed Shafiq was carried out by an organised group that waited for him in front the polling stations to cause hugger-mugger after his obvious lead of the polls, Shafiq's campaign said in a statement on Wednesday evening. Mubarak's former prime minister was attacked by protesters who hurled stones and shoes at him after he cast his ballot in a polling station in a New Cairo suburb of Cairo. Describing the assault on their candidate as "idiotic" and "abnormal", the campaign said that Shafiq is going ahead with his candidacy, fully confident. They related the attack to rumours circulating on Tuesday night that Shafiq had been hospitalised, which turned out to be bogus, insisting the intention in both cases was to curb his rising stakes. The best response to such "uncivilised behaviour” will be the ballots', they concluded. ##
